Madam Schachter: Old. in her 70s. frail. insane

Elie: Young, spry. lost belief in a loving god.

SETTING:
Detail the time and place the story is presently at:
Just left Auschwitz and went to Buna, another concentration camp in Germany
1944

Where were the prisoners brought?
to Buna

How were they transported?
they are walked through towns and fields and were forced to watch thir captors flirt with young girls, which is disgusting in a way, as theses people are literally marching the Jews to their deaths.

Describe the treatment of Madam Shachter. Why is she treated this way?
She is screaming about fire through the night and disturbing everyone. She is beaten multiple times into silence. A reason could be a disturbance of the peace, but this was a very common way of treating the mentally ill back in the day, and in the savagery that was taking over these people, it was a way of letting out frustrations.

Shachter sees a big fire that engulfs all of them, and will kill them all. this is a foreshadow to the camps burning Jews.

She has gone insane over the loss of her husband and son. She continually screams about fire, fire, burning. She is predicting (in an un-lucid way) the terror and horror of the camps, and the burning of the Jews. She sees it consuming them all, and is understandably frightened
