separated women and men, then young and old from the fit, and then sent to the barracks. After, they were forced to strip, run through the mud, and separated from the stronger and the normal. they then were shaved and bathed, and given clothes.

What change occurs in Elie’s faith?

He loses faith because he cannot fathom a loving god who could let something like the holocaust happen. He loses faith a caring being, and believes that all his years of studying the bible and Cabbala were all for nothing. At one point, he nearly runs into the electric fence to kill himself faster. He becomes more self-centered, not trying to help his father when he is beat.
